Neoen acknowledges the Wadawurrung people, Traditional Owners of the land on which Moorabool Battery stores energy. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Cultural heritage

The Wadawurrung people are the Traditional Owners for the land on which the Moorabool Battery is located.

Neoen is committed to ensuring proper cultural protocol is followed and will continue to consult with Wadawurrung representatives.

SUPPORTING victoria's ENERGY TRANSITION

The Moorabool Battery in Victoria is set to be a transformative asset for the state’s energy transition, providing a multifaceted approach to enhancing grid stability, increasing renewable energy utilisation, and reducing overall energy costs.

By offering rapid response to fluctuations in power supply and demand, it ensures a reliable and stable energy supply, crucial as the state moves towards a greater reliance on intermittent renewable sources. Additionally, the battery’s capacity for energy storage during low-demand periods for use during peak times maximises the efficiency of renewable energy sources, thus reducing the need for fossil fuel-based power generation. This, in turn, supports the development of a more distributed energy network, encourages investment in renewable energy projects, and enhances energy security and resilience, making it a cornerstone in Victoria’s journey towards a sustainable energy future.

LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

The Moorabool Battery, a large-scale storage solution, is set to integrate with Australia’s national electricity grid through the transmission network at the Moorabool Terminal Substation located in Victoria.

Currently, in the initial phases of its development, a final selection has yet to be made from several top battery technologies under consideration. Regardless of the technology selected, the Moorabool Battery aims to enhance regional stability by releasing stored energy into the grid when demand peaks.

Umwelt’s role

Umwelt are an environmental consultancy who are helping Neoen with environmental and social studies and development approvals for the project. Studies completed or underway are related to water (surface and groundwater), noise, visual, flora and vegetation, bushfire, and traffic.

These studies will be used to ensure the project addresses key environmental and planning needs.

BIG BATTERY EXPERTISE

Neoen are leading the way in delivering big batteries in Australia and around the world.

Our 300MW Victorian Big Battery, built next door to our future Moorabool Battery is now Australia’s biggest operational battery.

Neoen’s 150MW Hornsdale Power Reserve , more commonly known as the ‘Tesla Big Battery’, was the world’s first big battery. It has been keeping the lights on and electricity costs low for South Australians, since 2017.

Neoen’s Capital Battery is a 100 MW stand-alone battery capable of storing up to 200 MWh of energy with up to 2 hours of power in reserve.

supporting renewables

The battery will support increased amounts of renewable energy in Victoria through ‘firming’ wind and solar – storing cheap energy when the sun is shining and wind is blowing for releasing at times when its needed most, and through helping to deliver a more secure and modern energy system.

The Battery will help contribute towards Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% Renewable Energy by 2035 as well as Victoria’s emissions reduction targets, to cut emissions by 45%-50% below 2005 levels by 2030 and 75%-80% by 2035.
